About Me

I am an ER nurse, new to nursing, and new to the ER. I am terrified, exhilarated, and I LOVE my job. I have created this space to share and archive the lessons that I am learning, to blog about my day to day experiences, and to provoke discussions and dialogue with other ER nurses and healthcare professionals, and the general public on all things related to nursing, health and healthcare.

New Changes

Submitted by RBeavRN on Fri, 04/06/2012 - 00:56.

It has been a while since I have updated my blog. I have incurred many changes which include completing my BSN, and I will be beginning graduate school in August to pursue my Master's of Science in Nursing-Family Nurse Practitioner degree. This has been a very difficult decision because I love my career as an ER nurse, but I feel that there is no opportunity for advancement. The company I work for, who is a for-profit hospital, does not offer any upward mobility for those who are committed to higher education or training. Therefore, I feel stagnant in my current position and yearn for something different. I have been asked, "Are you sure that you want to treat sinusitis and otitis media all day?". Yes. I have been beyond blessed to have had the opportunity to serve my community for the past seven years in my role as an emergency nurse, with two of those including Flight Nursing working for our local Air Evac. I have experienced nearly every unimaginable trauma and medical scenairio, and I have learned more than I could have ever imagined.I just turned 30, my children are both in school, and my husband is established in his career as a Firefighter. I feel that this time in my life is the perfect opportunity to take a different approach in regards to my career. I genuinely love people; love listening to them speak of their families, their weekend plans, recent events/losses, etc. I want to be able to take the time to invest in those personal relationships while getting to provide their primary care services. I want the autonomy that position affords, but most importantly I want to be able to be a beacon of light in the healthcare community. As I have always been told, "no one cares how much you know, until they know how much you care".

Welcome back! Wow, Congratulations on completing your BSN, that's excellent!! Where are you planning on going for your MSN?

I think the FNP track is an excellent way to go for an ER nurse because you have had the experience of dealing with many different situations and disease processes and will be much better equipped to handle any kinds of patients, and to detect and respond to emergencies when they present themselves.
I think it's an excellent pathway to take and wish you all the best.  AND, you can always moonlight as an ED RN when you miss it too much :)
Keep us updated, and I hope you'll continue blogging here even when you become a FNP.

I will be completing my Master's of Science in Nursing at Loewenberg School of Nursing at the University of Memphis. I cannot wait to complete this long-awaited degree :)
